SIMON ESTES continued.....Page 2 label. And the National Symphony Orchestra of Washington chose him as soloist with Antal Dorati for a performance of William Schuman's "A Free Song" on the gala opening night program inaugurating the new Concert Hall of Washington's John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The Deutsche Oper in Berlin has guest-starred him in five different productions, including four appearances with the Company in Rome. For the Hamburg Opera he created the part of Uncle Albert in the world premiere of Gunther Schuller's controversial opera "The Visitation," in which he later took the lead role of Carter Jones on BBC-TV and for the U.S. premiere of the Schuller opera in San Francisco. With the San Francisco Opera he also scored a personal triumph singing all four villains in Offenbach's "Tales of Hoffmann," and with the Chicago Lyric Opera he was a notable Banquo in Verdi's "Macbeth." Five performances of Mozart's "Magic Flute" for the Scottish Opera; "Turandot and "The Marriage of Figaro" for the Lubeck (Germany) Opera; "The Marriage of Figaro" and "Macbeth" for the Boston Opera, "Aida" for the Philadelphia Lyric; "The Magic Flute" and "Fidelio" for the Portland Opera; "Julius Caesar" for the American Opera Society in New York, and "Nabucco" at the San Sebastian Festival in Spain; have been other milestones of the Estes opera career thus far. Notable Estes concert appearances have included Handel's "Messiah" with The New York Philharmonic under Sir Malcolm Sargent, with Ormandy and the Philadelphians at the Saratoga Festival and at the Hollywood Bowl; Haydn's "Creation" with the New Philharmonia of London under Raphael Frubek de Borgos; Beethoven's "Missa Solemnis" with the New Philharmonia under Carlo Giulini for the 1900th Anniversary Celebration of the City of York; Mozart's C Minor Mass for Lincoln Center's "Mostly Mozart" Festival; a Beethoven Ninth with The National Symphony in Washington and a Verdi Requiem at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City. He also appears on the Angel label with Montserrat Caballe and Placido Domingo in the newly issued complete recording of "Don Carlo"; and on the RCA-Victor label in The Handel Society recording of "Judas Maccabeus," which he will also sing with the Society on its 172 series at Carnegie Hall.
