QUAD-CITY TIMES Saturday, March 7, 1987 Met Opera star to sing [[italics]]Booking fulfills spirit of series[[end italics]] by Linda Cook QUAD-CITY TIMES One of the Metropolitan Opera's leading stars, Simon Estes, will appear at Wesley United Methodist Church, 400 Iowa Ave., Muscatine, March 17 as part of the Jackson Concert Series. Phyllis Woodley, secretary for the Jackson Concert Committee, explained that the series was established after a trust was left to Wesley United Methodist Church by Robert Jackson, a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and a Muscatine Lawyer. Jackson died in 1979. Four concerts are scheduled yearly. the trust designates that the concerts should have general appeal to the public, should be open and free to the public, and held whenever possible in the church. The trust stipulates that the concerts be held in Muscatine, and that they involve "distinguished artists." "We try to stick with concerts we feel Mr. Jackson would have approved of," Mrs. Woodley said. We stay fairly close to classical," but not strictly classical. Future concerts will include Christian music performed by the Imperials. In the past, bluegrass and orchestra music have also been featured. A nine-member committee was appointed by the church to book all artists. The public response has been great. "We've had nearly full houses for almost all of our concerts -- about 600 to 950 a concert," Mrs. Woodley said. Appearing with Estes will be Roberta Alexander, female lead in Porgy and Bess" with Simon when they performed two years ago. The two will perform at 8 p.m. March 17. Reserved seat tickets and general admission tickets for the Jackson Concert Series are available at the Wesley Church office, about three weeks before the concert.
