IN PERSON [[Photo caption]] Simon Estes [[end caption]] Tickets for Estes show go on sale Tickets are now on sale for this spring's special UI Opera Theater production of Moussorgsky's Boris Godunov, featuring Metropolitan Opera star and Iowa native Simon Estes in the title role. Estes, who most recently won critical acclaim in the role of Porgy in the Metropolitan Opera's production of Gershwin's Porgy and Bess, will star alongside UI students in the Opera Theater production, under the direction of Beaumont Glass with James Dixon conducting. HIS APPEARANCE in Iowa City will mark Estes's first performance of a full-length opera in his home state and his first American performance as the tormented Russian czar Boris Godunov, a role Estes has made famous in Europe. Estes's talent as a bass baritone was recognized in 1960 by former UI voice teacher Charles Kellis. From the UI, Estes went on to the famed Juilliard School of Music in New York City and, after receiving a medal in Moscow's Tchaikovsky competition, to the great opera houses of Europe. THE HISTORIC performances of Boris Godunov, part of the Iowa Center for the Arts fiftieth anniversary celebration are scheduled for April 25, 26 and 27, with all three performances beginning at 7 p.m. He has sung more than 80 different roles and performed all over the world with some of the world's premier orchestras. It's a long way from Centerville, Iowa where his father worked as a coal miner, making about $40 per week. 20 GOI FEB. 6, 1986
