QUAD-CITY TIMES Saturday, July 24, 1982 Hail to the grail American bass baritone Simon Estes, a native of Centerville, Iowa, and a graduate of the University of Iowa, holds the Holy Grail during dress rehearsal for Richard Wagner's "Parsifal," which opens the renowned Wanger Festival in Bayreuth, West Germany, Sunday. Estes, a permanent member of the ensemble of the Zurich Opera House, is the first black American to sing the "Amfortas" at the festival. Estes is the nephew of former Davenport resident Cecile Cooper, who received numerous honors for her extensive volunteer work. (AP photo)
