Met star charges discrimination By Frederick M, Winship UPI Senior Editor NEW YORK (UPI) - When young Simon Estes, a bass-baritone from Centerville, Iowa was a winner of the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 1966 he hoped the Metropolitan Opera would offer him some small roles. But he had to wait 10 year before he sand with the Met company, and then only on its national tour in the role of Oreveso in Bellini's "Norma" He then had to wait another five years for his formal debut at the Metropolitan Opera House as Landgrave Hermann in Wagner's "Tannhauser" scheduled for next Jan. 4. Estes is black. He believes his color has a lot to do with the fact that he had to spend years building a career in Europe before he landed a contract with the Met assigning him four leading roles through the 1982-83 season. ONE OF THESE is the title role is Mussorgsky's "Boris Godunov" CARNEGIE HALL Metropolitan Opera's Simon Estes p.1 (of 2) THE HAWK-EYE Thursday October 22, 1981
