On this same date, according to [ [] EDNA GRIFFIN was noted leaving the home of OTTO ANSTROM at 1212 Second Avenue, Des Moines, Iowa. b2 b7D On July 18, 1951, [ ] further advised that OTTO ANSTROM's car was again parked in front of the home of EDNA GRIFFIN at 1108 - 3rd Street, Des Moines, Iowa. According to [ ] on the night of August 4, 1951, OTTO ANSTROM's car the GRIFFIn car and a 1940 Plymouth two door sedan bearing Iowa license 77-31133, later determine to belong to WILLIAM R. SMITH 1601 East Avenue, Northeast, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, were parked in front of the subject's home at 1108 - 3rd Street, Des Moines, Iowa. WILLIAM R. SMITH is Chairman of the Progressive Party in the State of Iowa and has been reported to be a member of the Communist Party. b2 b7D Confidential Informant, [ ] of known reliability, advised that Mr. and Mrs. GRIFFIN were in attendance as delegates to the National Committee meeting of the Progressive Party held at Minneapolis, Minnesota August 18 and 19, 1951. Confidential Informant, [ ] of known reliability, advised July 23, 1951 that there had been several meetings at the home of EDNA GRIFFIN in Des Moines, Iowa, one being held in May 1951 and the other around the last of June 1951. According to [ ] the latter meeting involved the Peace Conference in Chicago. [ ] also advised that OTTO ANSTROM has been a frequent visitor at the home of EDNA GRIFFFIN. [ ] was unable to advise as to other or more definite dates concerning the above mentioned meetings at the home of EDNA GRIFFIN. [ ] advised that EDNA and her husband, STANLEY GRIFFIN, drove their Pontiac to Chicago to the Peace Conference known as the American Peoples Congress and Exposition for Peace held in Chicago, Illinois June 29 to July 1, 1951, and took some people with them. As indicated previously by [ ] a meeting was held at [ ] upon her return from Chicago. During the Spring of 1951 an attempt was made at Des Moines, Iowa to unionize the employees of the Midwest Bag and Burlap Company in Des Moines, Iowa. According to [ ] EDNA GRIFFIN, the subject was involved in this strike to the extent that she helped the strikers prepare leaflets and other materials, setting out the purpose of the strike. [ ] also advised that EDNA GRIFFIN gave the employees advice on how to conduct the strike. b2 b7C b7D -2-
