PAGE 4. Buxton. dominately black the Doctors were about half white and half black. The first known colored Dr. was Doctor E. A. Carter, who was a company Doctor and was paid by (check off) by the mining company; The other Doctors were Dr. C. G. Robinson; Dr. John H. Williams; Dr. Sumner Taylor; and Dr. Hubert London who was the last medical Doctor in Buxton and the Dentest was Dr. Lenford Willis. The white Doctors were: Dr. Powell (a company Doctor) Dr. Chester; Dr. Mui Doctor Mater; Dr. Musser and the eldest Doctor of all with his office on the second floor over the Thomas Drug Store. The lawyers were James Spears and George H. Woodson who was a Howard University Law Graduate and was well known to be a real giant in his professional; He helped to form the black Bar Association; and becoming its first president, he also had the distinction of defending more murder cases in Iowa than any other Lawyer until the record wa broken by a laywer in DesMoines, Iowa. His name was Howard and he had been active in the law business for many years. Gaines Town and Cooper Town were on the other side of the county line in Mahaska County and the Sharp End or greasy Spoon as it was sometime referred to was at the Southwestern part of the Town. The Pharmacist was B. F. Cooper who owned the Drug Store; grocery store and Dance Hall. Reuben Gaines Sr. owned the Hotel; drug store; dance Hall; three saloons; and a wholesale place; Millinary Shop; tobacco factory cigar store; livery Stable; barber shop; jewelry store; taylor shop and a dozen dwelling houses, and a grocery store operated by Elijah London. These shops and business places were all rented except: the saloons; and wholesale place; the drug store; the dance hall and the Elks Club. The Hotel was rent to a Mr. Oscar Peterson and the next renters were Charley White 'brother in law) and Reuben Gaines Jr. After which the Hotel was rented to a Mr. Andy Jefferies. Jackson Brookins was an engineer who came to Buxton from the south but he worked in the coal mines for several years; in 1922 when the Deforest Radio came into existence in Buxton; Jackson and a helper named L started building a Radio and he discovered something that science was unfamiliar with at this time so He came to Reuben Gaines Sr. to borrow $400 dollars for his first model. Immediately the Railroad Commission was interested so they hired him and took him to Chicago and rented two floors the Transportation building on the eleventh floor down in the loop. It was n long before he had a miniature locomotive and Railroad cars and was known a "The Jackson Brookins Train Control". The Comission visited him several times a year and advised him what changes to make during the eleven years that followed. The engine had yellow; green and red lights that came on automatically acording to its peoximity to other trains in the same block. A whistle would also shrill out a loud tone to aid the engineer if his hearing was faulty. At this point the Train Control is perfected so the
