PAGE 37 BUXTON. THE THIRD GRADE BUT HE WAS THE FIRST TO FIND OUT. WHAT THEY WERE LOOKING FOR: He says and I quote "Buddy this is it and it says(Good Alchol)" well the first letter may have been scratched or obscured in some manner but what it really said was "Wood Alchol". They all were very sick and as a matter of fact that Carpenter was not doing too well so my father told Uncle George and Noah Welsh to hitch up the serry and take him home which they did but on the return my father enquired as to the Carpenters health and My Uncle George, who started every subject with (Buddy) and I quote; "Buddy that fellow died before we got him home". They should have examined it thouroughly and looked for the Crossbon Iva Rhodes was 16 years of age and with her parents permission I went to see her constantly until the year 1922, excluding one year in the Army when she got lonsome and married one of my friends; but was pregnant and divorced by the time I was discharged from the Army. After close relationship for about a year she made a revelation about herself dating back to the time she was ten years old. Ruth, her mother had a clost friend that lived only a block west of her home, they went to the moving pictures together often; but Ruth would not leave her daughter alone; thereby taking her to her friends house for protectio where Mr. Lee Garrett would be in charge while they were gone and in all probil Mrs. Garretts husband would seem trustworthy since he had preached several sermons (but with no charge from the Church administration) and also had preach at several funerals; Iva explained that while her mother and Garretts wife we attending the movies at the Y M C A that he raped her and told her if she told anybody he would kill her. She was afraid and told nobody but me what took pla in her mothers friend upstairs while they were gone. The way he raved and shout from the Pulpit it would seem unbelievable but those women left the Fox to take care of the Goose. I heard him preach two funerals and all the time I felt it would be a source of satisfaction if I could strangle him until he turned blue. He could not have turned black because he was already black. It was very friendly with his brother Joe and the whole family was the same color as Carte black ink and Joe told a group of men once that when he was born that he was so much lighter than the other children that his father and mother almost seperat Five car load of youngsters came to Buxton from Hitman one night to observe the excitement but it was on the Friday that was at the end of a three weeks pay and that was the quitest, days that happens three or four times a year. So since there was no excitement that night they created their own amusement. they unloaded before the Hotel and near the livery stable and they all chose a partner and in the course of a few minutes there was almost a dozen first fights underway. As I looked around there must have been two dozen home folks watchi this brawl. The Hiteman boys age from 18 to 21 were knocking out one anothers teeth; and some with a bloody nose and a black eye here and there just to see was best man.
