I don't believe you ever did that. Shame on you! And then doesn't she say something to the effect that it's due to the pleasure of entertaining my dear old man that she's interested in me? A nice thing, that. Am I never again to win any approbation on my own merits? Simply because I'm now your rib, must all the nice things that come to me come thru you as a medium? Oh woe is me! Later doesn't the lady say if I wish she'll correspond with me? If she but knew how I raved and smote my chest in my efforts to get the meaning out of her letter, she'd at least stick to words I've heard of before. I didn't find a single beaucoup! Why didn't you tell her I knew what that meant?
