TO MY FRIENDS -HATTIE AND IRA- As I sat alone in the twilight still On the eve of a beautiful day, I said to my fancy : "Go wonder at will." And she carried me miles away To a green mossy bank by a clear flowing stream Which reflected the sunset's red glow- And the hill-guarded ashore, and the trees bending o'er, And the clouds were all mirrored below. It was peaceful and still on that beautiful shore, Save the twitter of birds in the trees, And the whippoorwill's cry from the opposite shore And the sigh of the evening breeze. Now rounding the bend by yon wooded hill A little frail bark may be seen - It glides on its way o'er the glittering spray Like a sea shell just tinted with green As nearer it comes in the sunset light Two well known forms appear, Their faces I know and their voices too, But their words I cannot hear "Of what are you talking, dear friends?" -- I asked, "Do you ever speak of me? And tell me pray is there room today In your little boat for three?" -4-
