The demonstrators seem not to have read most of the public opinion surveys on attitudes against the Vietnam war because, when they gathered, they made it clear that the demonstration's purpose was to inform the public that the war is a very bad thing. Editorials the next day in the Daily Iowan, the student newspaper, called the protest " irresponsible and unfortunate." Said one " According to some of the more aggressive and articulate demonstrators, if you're not a full-feathered dove, you automatically must be a warmonger. Question of Motive " This raises the question of the demonstrators' motives. Are they really trying to influence opinion, to change attitudes to promote the pacifist cause?" It added that the demonstrators' "tactics should be labeled for what they are: Adolescent shenanigans by individuals seeking personal publicity." That Tuesday morning, the demonstrators heard four speakers. One Robert F. Sayre, an associated professor of English, complained later that published accounts of his speech (demonstrators should "reappraise" their tactics; " We haven't stopped Dow have we?") did not include as a qualification his view that the fines paid last month would have been better spent on a grass-roots publicity campaign. The last speaker, Stephen G. Morris, an electronics technician, yelled, " Let's go get Dow," and the demonstrators, splitting into three tactical groups started They were stopped from reaching the recruiters by police using clubs and Mace. Through the day there were flareups worthy of the guerrilla genius of Mao Tse-tung. The quiet of the library was broken by a mob chanting " Dow must go now." Several times, the classes in Macbride Hall, University Hall, Schaeffer Hall and the English Philosophy Building were put into an uproar by the demonstrators coursing through the halls. demonstrators who hadn't read Middle Earth, a mimeographed sheet-handed out during the speeches - told them what to do: Disperse and regroup at a place to be announced.
