[handwritten] [n.d. (1965-1970)] SHOULD ROTC BE ABOLISHED ROTC ABROAD ROTC TRAINS THE OFFICERS THAT KEEP AMERICA'S ARMY ROLLING IN VIETNAM AND AROUND THE WORLD. So what's wrong with that? We have to defend ourselves, don't we? But who does the army protect? We think the pattern has clearly been to protect the profits of American business overseas and at home. As Henry Cabot Lodge, former Ambassador to Vietnam put it, " Vietnam does not exist in a geographical vacuum -- from it large storehouses of wealth and population can be influenced and undermined." ( Boston Globe 2/28/65). Even in the midst of war, American companies are already exploiting this potential wealth. International Harvester Corporation recently closed a plant in Chicago, throwing thousands of workers out of work and moved operations to Vietnam to take advantage of low wages. " Maximum wage in Saigon is set by law ad $1.40/day). And this is only the beginning -- "... magnificant business opportunities exist in Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, Indonesia, Malaysia, and SIngapore. As the military situation in Vietnam improves, they expect the flow of business to double, triple, and quadruple." (Nations Business 2/28/69) There has been a similar flood of investment to other third world countries as the rate of profit at home falls. The United States now has occupying forces all over the world to protect these investments, and also support countless reactionary dictators who are committed to defending the profits of US Imperialism. This system of world domination for profit takes thousands of jobs away from American workers every year and tends to force down wages at home. ROTC AT HOME ROTC TRAINED OFFICERS HAVE LEG TROOPS TO PUT DOWN BLACK REBELLIONS IN AMERICAN CITY GHETTOS. The federal government spends $80 Billion a year on the military while virtually ignoring the problems of the oppressed Blacks and other minorities. Why? Corporations can not make money off ending hunger and malnutrition, (est. between 20 and 25 million Americans suffer from hunger and some sort of malnutrition), not can immediate profits be made from providing adequate low income housing. However Corporations can and do make huge profits from the war by providing the military with the implements of war. ROTC TRAINED OFFICERS HAVE BEEN USED IN AN ATTEMPT TO KILL STUDENT DISSENT AT BERKELY, COLUMBIA, CHICAGO, AND CAMPUSES THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY.
