THE DAMN THING PAGE SEVENTEEN __________________________________________ ECCE HOMO! On September 24, 1940, the most popular Honourary Member of the Los Angeles Science Fantasy Society left for the wilds of New Jersey. He left to register in his home town for the draft. Weeping at the station during this sad departure were Ackerman, Ray Bradbury, &Ye Ed. Will we never see you again, Charlie?"we beseached him with tears dripping down our faces. For seven long months the tears ceased to dry, and the Ed of the Damn Thing kept an endless strain of correspondence between Los Angeles and Elizabeth, New Jersey. And at last he was rewarded, for several months ago Hornig announced that he was coming. The club was in a dither. (The latest kind of pink ones, with frills on the bottom.) As April 30, 1941 approached members could not sleep at night. And On the Sunday before the last Wednesday, plans were made for the /official Charlie Hornig back to //welcoming his adopted homeland. Huge signs of affectionate love were printed by the trembling hands of Bradbury. Such signs as: HORNIG, THE POOR MAN'S CLARK GABLE, WELCOME KAROLO— DRAFT BOARD#13, and HORNIG IS BACK, THAT HACK!!! And the night of the arival, ten persons sifted into the Santa Fe bus station at 6th & Main St. They carried signs and the Shangri-La photoshop Press Camera. And with a wild shout they mobbed a loan figure who got off the bus from Flagstaff. This picture is recorded for posterity, and I believe has been sent to Fantasy Fiction Field. It is truly a touching picture. Hornig is in the center, arms extended, choked with joy. Supporting him on the right is a hysterical Paul Freehafer. Hiding behind Ackerman's hand is a shouting Joquel, and Ackerman, carrying a huge sign, is smiling from ear to ear. Even Ed. Chamberlain, who had never seen Hornig, is laughing as he holds a sign of greeting. THE SHANGRI-LA PHOTOSHOP Official Photogs for the Dopes in the Most complete file of fan negatives in existence.
