Fort Madison Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People Fort Madison, Iowa 52627 Newsletter Ike Smalls trophy winner of '63 June 11, 1964 Last month, another soldier in the battle for human rights died. Ike Smalls, a veteran member of the NAACP, Life Membership Chairman of the Iowa State Conference of Branches, National Vice President, past president of the Iowa State Conference and the Des Moines, Branch, of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, left us a shining example which remains to serve as a guide for all of us, in the work which is yet to be done! Lever Brothers products ** The national advertising policies of the following companies allows for the removal of their names from our list, for the present. Woolworths Jantzen The United States Senate voted in favor of cloture, thereby making passage of the civil rights legislation possible. However, even the eventual passage of such legislation will not make the ideals of our Republic a reality. The job which lies before us is larger than ever ... and our responsibility continues to grow as the struggle for the acquisition of the complete rights of citizenship goes on. The need for greater understanding between men becomes more and more evident with the passing of time. Today, then, does not set itself forth as a time for complacency ... but, rather, now is the time for all of us, as Americans, to renew our pledge to work unceasingly, until equality of opportunity and full justice for all men under the law, are no longer just ideals or a legalistic reality, but are a part of everyday living for all men ... regardless of their race, color or creed! It is not something which can be gained a moment ago; you cannot figt for it a moment from now.
