College of Education CLASSROOM DISRUPTIONS September 23, 1970 In the event of classroom disruption, the following procedure has been established. The primary intent is to provide a vehicle for immediate response to a faculty request should the need arise. What Constitutes a Disruption? Identification of a classroom disruption must necessarily depend upon the personal discretion and judgement of the faculty member concerned. Should conduct considered to be disruptive within those guides defined in rules of personal conduct, occur in your classroom the following steps should be initiated. 1) Disruptees should be requested to "cease and desist" for benefit of the class as a whole. 2) If your judgment dictates, class should be dismissed. 3) In any event, the disruption should immediately be reported to the Dean of the College of Education or his representative. When a disruption is reported to the Dean, please provide: 1) A general description of the situation 2) Identification of disruptees (if possible) 3) Recommendations for action requisite to the situation 4) Your location and how you may be contacted. Response to Faculty Call The Dean, or his representative, will make immediate contact with a central administration official and relay information concerning the nature of the disruption, disruptees involved, and recommended action. On the basis of information provided by the faculty member concerned, the administrative representative will contact the faculty member involved and propose further action. The Dean, or his representative, and/or a central administration official will come to the faculty member's assistance. Alternative Procedure In the event that you are unable to initiate the above procedure, campus security should be contacted directly at 353-4583 This memorandum is for faculty information, but should be shared with graduate assistants and instructors teaching classes.
