Kitchen Table: Women of Color Press Box 592 Van Brunt Station Brooklyn, NY 11215 KITCHEN TABLE: WOMEN OF COLOR PRESS is committed to producing and distributing the work of Third World women of all racial/cultural heritages, sexualities, and class that will further the cause of Third World women's personal and political freedom. Although other presses may at times publish work by women of color, we are not their top priority and fewer works by women of color get published by both independent and trade publishers than those of any other racial-sexual group. On the other hand, the amount and quality of work actually being produced by Third World women writers and artists is phenomenal (especially considering the social and economic conditions under which we create) and is in no way accurately reflected by the disproportionately small volume of work that actually gets published. Too often Third World women writers find ourselves in the position of having a complete manuscript and then facing the dilemma of having no real options as to where to submit it in order to get it produced. The establishment of KITCHEN TABLE: WOMEN OF COLOR PRESS addresses this need. We are a group of Third World women writers, cultural workers, and community activists who have been involved in the early planning stages of this venture: "I want encouragement- to be as bold as or bolder than I dared to be. A place where my most honest perceptions are not just OK, but the only acceptable offering. I want a place to publish that lets me be a Third World woman the way I experience it, not the way that someone else thinks..." "I would say we would want to promote awareness of sexism racism classism ageism homophobia (for openers) & add our voices to the struggle against these demons..." "...but the women I want to write to have nothing that is being done for them that is real- all they get is diets and casseroles & love stories & make up & clothes & stand by yo man even if he is kickin yo ass & rapin yo daughter..." "I understand now that what is different in perspective between our various groups as women of color is what can make our movement make sense in the lives of women all across this country & stretching out from there. What is common between us is what will allow us to work together." RESOURCES NEEDED 1. Financial Contributions-- Of course, we welcome contributions to KITCHEN TABLE of any size. Please make cheques or money orders payable to Kitchen Table Press and send to our PO Box 592 Van Brunt Station, Brooklyn NY 11215. 2. Materials-- including mailing lists, planning budgets, distribution networks, fund-raising ideas & contacts, marketing info, office & production equipment, sample contracts, policy statements, ad exchanges, tax info, etc. 3. Manuscripts-- Please don't send us completed Ms! As of January 1, 1982, we will be happy to look at outlines for book projects, accompanied by a short letter telling us something about yourself and your work and a self-addressed envelope with enough postage (S.A.S.E.). We will only publish women of color with good (intentioned) hearts and strong minds. All retrogrades get back! 4. Third World Women-- Any women of color in the NY area who are interested in helping make this press work. This means women who want to be involved in the day-to-day, un-romantic, un-dramatic labor of love this press will demand. (For more information, write us.)
