SFC 11 downright juvenile and puerile; either in fiction, or departments, or both. Because of the extreme lack of [[?]] evinced in these publications it becomes very difficult to name any definite one [[?]] the worst offender; however, insofar as it is largely a matter of opinion, I personally would say that the newest arrival, MARVEL SCIENCE STORIES, achieves that doubtful distinction. In this publication commercialism makes itself manifest in a most unusual manner as far as fantastic fiction is concerned. Never before, to the best of my knowledge, has "human interest," as the editor calls it, and "licentious lewdness," as I call it, been employed to the sickening, degrading extent it is in the first issue of the magazine. Two of the stories in the first issue, "Avengers of Space" and "Dictators of the Americas," are the main offenders. And they are both by Kuttner. Kuttner sold three of the six stories published in the first MSS, going greatly to prove this article, I think. These stories show not only the eagerness of unscrupulous publishers to do anything for money, for more [?]meroialism is no excuse for this, but also the eagerness of a promising author to do so. Kuttner is admittedly a hack, but that is his method of making a living-- which is his business -- only he could at least be decent. It would seem to me that the most insulting feature of the entire affair is for the publishers even to assume that we, who glory in our preference of fantasy above other fiction because of its lack of such qualities, would even slightly enjoy such trash.
