12..................................................................................FAN The Experiment looked about him. He asked: "Has anyone got a cigaret?" [Centered] ----------- The Experiment was a big disappointment to Dr. Morden and to the more blood-thirsty of the staff members. He was well-behaved, spoke faultless English and was of average intelligence. He had never tried to kill Morden, or anyone else for that matter. He never ran amok, preferring to stay at home (we fixed up bed and things for him in the lab) and write sonnets--Springdw, ex-chief contributor to the Stein Song (the University magazine) was one of the students used in his manufacture. The Experiment had a quaint habit of referring to the various parts of his person by nam, such as: "Gramercy, my left foot," "Catsmeat, my liver,*" or "Springdew, my soul.." After a week or two we tired of referring to him as The Experiment and looked around for a name for HIM. "His first name should be Hugh, " said the dean. "After Morden," supplemented Poggle. I interrupted here. "Since he's about perfect" I said, "and since he's far exceeded our expec-tations, I suggest we name him Success." The dean, who was a bit slow in such matters, began: "After ---" "After Hugh," said Poggle. [Footnote] *Very few of us suspected that Hugh Morden had a sense of humor until he insisted upon Poggle especially securing Cyril Catsmeat for him so that his liver might be used in The Experiment.
