In my opinion the description which Hannes created for this magical adventure was the height of his feeling for the early Merritt style. The episode moves with all the wonderment and beauty of "The Moon Pool". The final work of the writing was finished, in thirteen weeks with my experience furnishing the food and pattern backgrounds for the nightclub scene. It had been over three months of privation and mental strain for Hannes, a labor that I am sure we would never have encouraged had we known of the fans who did their utmost to belittle and defeat us at every turn. As to the illustrations, another eight weeks of back-breaking labor and eyestrain on Hannes' part went into their making, and certainly they are the greatest set of original illustrations ever created for an original fantasy volume. No common bubbles, or static stills of movie stars from second rate features were used here. They were drawn from actual models, done in Hannes' sixteenth century manner of painstaking stipling, a feat which deprived him of normal eyesight for more than a year after their completion. The male model for the set was Walter Caron, a ballet dancer who I had met in my shop, and who has one of the largest record collections I have ever seen, as well as a library of over 6,000 books. Hannes could not afford to pay him for the long hours of standing in the cold of his top floor studio, and the original of the illustration o page of the finished book was given to him by Hannes in payment for the cooperation he had given in the rest of the set. The female model, the Fox Woman, was the wife of one of Hannes' personal acquaintances, and for reasons of embarrassment, I shall omit her name. The final fate of these illustrations was a far happier one than their inception. All except two were sold at good prices to persons who re- 10
