Collector's Shelf TOURMALIN'S TIME CHEQUES F. Anstey D. Appleton & Company, N... Y..., 1891 We have decided to run in serial form beginning in this issue, and old, but undeservedly forgotten classic F. Anstey's Tourmalin's Time Cheques. Few fantasy readers are aware of Anstey's sense of humor, far in advance of the Edwardian days in which he lived. All of our readers are familiar with the works of Thorne Smith, but few realise that most of the plots and story backgrounds for the Smith stories were taken from the earlier Anstey novels. For instance, "The Night Life of the Gods" can claim as its direct parent Anstey's "The Tinted Venus"; "The Bishop's Jaegers" in the earlier Anstey novel "The Talking Horse". We do not claim that the Smith stories are not amusing yarns, but they can all be found in the more simple form in the Anstey works of fifty years previous. 32) (This magazine will feature an article in the works of this forgotten fantasy author in the near future.)
