FANTASCIENCE DIGEST Page 23 side's trouble is probably that he simply doesn't have enough experience with the mags. (Miske's letter definitely demands a reply. In the first place, Whiteside has been reading science fiction for almost ten years, and he has complete collections of all pro mags. That definitely shows that he [[underline]]is[[end underline]] an experienced reader. You fail to take into consideration the fact that everybody doesn't rate the stories in the same way you do. (Thank Ghu!) Regardless, the reviews are being discontinued so you should be happy.--RAM) JOE RIPA: I have read the anniversary issue of your magazine from cover to cover and find it very interesting. Your best feature is "Behind the Scenes at Amazing," a very interesting column that should be doubled in size. Henry Kuttner's short story was quite funny and very good for a "fan" mag. I don't think the ratings of the various magazines are necessary. There are enough comments in the readers' department of each magazine. I am enclosing 15[[cent symbol]] for the next issue of Fantascience. Incidentally, I didn't have such a hard time reading your magazine, but it could be improved, of course. I suppose I'll be running to the mail box for the next month waiting for the next issue. SAM MOSKOWITZ: THE FIRST ANNIVERSARY ISSUE OF FANTASCIENCE DIGEST! First of all, it certainly was delectable. My favorites (outside of my own stuff) were; "Who Says It's Not Worthwhile" by Robert A. Madle, "Stf. in the Comics" by Harry Warner, "Death is a Diplodocus" by Henry Kuttner, and "Crax Stf'al" (they were really funny this time) by Dale Hart. Conover was pretty stale, tho his startling announcement of the death of Hatch bought a sudden mistiness to my eyes.Reinsberg was pretty punk this month. The reat of the articles were reasonably good. I take issue with Whiteside on several points. Weinbaum's "The Black Flame" rates an f or, at most, an f plus. "Exodus" rated Excellent in any man's language. "The Forgiveness of Tenchu Taen" rated the lowest you can possibly give it. Instead of calling the place by its actual name--China, Kummer calls it mars. Fooey! Reviews should be shortened to a mere sentence on each story. The cover and Rothman's MARS were SUPERB! Agnew was pretty punk; hektographing very good. Issue as a whole; 'Yum, yum in a very undignified manner. HARRY WARNER, JR: The long-awaited Anniversary FANTASCIENCE DIGEST has been duly received, and comments follow: Cover:well done, very, but a little too much crowded in. Leaving out the city or buildings, or stuff, at the top and some of the smoke and debris, would have produced a simpler and more pleasing effect. But the whole thing is surprisingly good, especially the man. Can't say so much for the interpretation of Mars by Rothman, mainly spoiled by the horrible figure. Sa[[underline]]M[[end underline]]oskowitz' article intensely interesting, especially since I had read one spoiled page of it on the back of your last letter, and have been feverish to get the rest. Dale Hart's article was statistically pleasing, as was the editor's. Bahr's article extremely good; modesty forbids my praising the next, though I should sue for damages for getting it in backward. Fans will rave; they will scream; they cill cuss; they will, in short, mow you down for printing pro mag reviews--but I like the blamed things! But don't shorten them---either keep them
