FANTASY COMMENTATOR #5 Koenig has taken all the worst he could find in fandom, & squeezed it into one disgusting lump. This is hardly fair. & then he finishes with, "isn't it about time to take stock & to clean house? The solution is obvious." This is hardly constructive criticism. & pardon my denseness, but the solution is not so obvious to me. What's to be done? A new APA? I would join--providing Wodin Koenig & Freya Searles would let me - but i'm afraid it would be a pretty dull affair. If you stick strictly to stf & fantasy fiction, what's to do? FC seems to fill that niche rather nicely, & still comes up with such yawn-provokers as "Past Decades in Science-Fiction." What the devil would other publications do for material? As I've said before, (which none of you purists seemed to notice, or couldn't answer) confining ourselves to such narrow limits is like examining the roof of the Empire State Building instead of enjoying the view. What's so worthless about discussing the vistas opened to us by the reading of stfantasy? Why should we stifle these new & exciting ideas? If they were so banal, no doubt we could find many places in which to air them, & leave you with your dusty meditations. At any rate, you & your colleagues are a disgruntled minority. Most of us find the association quite congenial, with all its faults. If you are unable to suggest any specific remedies for any of the bad conditions that exist, your cavilling only adds to the heap of "childish arguments" etc, which you so deplore. Brother Laney, despite his purple verbiage, has done more constructive work in the field during his short tenure than you can boast in all your august years. Your younger counterpart, Langley Searles, should convince you 15
