I Have Forgotten You? Can one forget the dearest thing he owned, The only thing in life to which he clung, The only thing which made him cling to life itself? Now that you are resting with my dreams, amongst the unattainables, Your allure has been enhanced by time and space and loneliness, And by your very inaccessibility. (My sterner self is sneering at this sentimental turn, Cynically calling me to task For having overlooked certain obvious facts, But I will shout it down.) In this bitter heart they said could not be moved, There is a new-made scar that will never completely heal. For on these sneering lips that seldom smile Your kisses were the last -- And in these hard cold eyes there sometimes forms a tear, Not of self-pity, but of vain regret, For something precious that I lost. --hj 22
