ED CARTIER IN THE ARMY CAMPBELL'S "Mother Goose" man, who missed his calling when he didn't link up with the publishers of those famous volumes, is now in the army! this is the second top-notch artist Campbell has lost via the same route. Schneeman is the other boy, now stationed outside of Denver, Colorado. However, unlike the case of Schneeman, any dearth of Cartier drawings will not be noticed for many a month. Before Cartier left for Camp he was handed an assignment for all the drawings he could do. The Result: Campbell as[sic] a fair-sized stock on hand. And as a final commentary we must mention that while the Army has been taking a high toll of artists, few authors have been called. Waht is the answer? Are authors better politicians or do artists [eat?] better? SMITHS 2nd LENSMEN NORMAN L. KNIGHT IS E. E. SMITH -- Tom Wright E.E. Smith's "Grey Lensman" sequel , a massive manuscript of 118,000 words has already been scheduled for "Astounding Science Fiction". This story is titled "SECOND STAGE LENSMAN". If published in once piece it would consume space equal to one and two thirds issues of Astounding. The story will be published in four parts each installment the length of a short novel. Hubert Rogers has already completed the illustrations for the novel. He has done two covers for it, plus plenty of inside illustrations. From Tom Wright(see his letter on page 2) comes the sensational assertion that E.E. Smith has turned out work under the pseudonym of Norman L. Knight. Knight has had several novels and a number of short stories published in Astounding. Most of which have received a better-than-average reception. DeCAMP INVITED TO BREAD-LOAD CONFERENCE SPRAGUE de CAMP receives another boost to his prestige with an invitation to attend the annual BREAD-LOAF CONFERENCE in Vermont. These invitations are highly [priced?] not prized]] by authors and critics for they are granted only to those of them who are conceded to be "Big-Shots". The publication of de Camp's first book and the contemplation of another, coupled with his magazine popularity were undoubtedly the deciding factors in his receiving this valuable invitation. JOHN W CAMPBELL JR has confessed to the manufacture of the various powders and mixtures of chemicals that go into the Fluorsecence[sic] Kits offered along with an altra[sic] violet lamp given as primiuns[sic] for subscriptions ASTOUNDING SCIENCE FICTION, THE SHADOW, and DOC SAVAGE magazines. This [is?] done because it is cheaper to have Campbell make up the kits that[sic] for Street & Smith to buy them from a chemical house. SHANGRI-LA 1942
