30. Science Adventure Stories ************************************************************ world of 3000 had, within ninety four years, been replaced by a planet of a very much earlier pattern. "But there remained a semblance of the former class of people . . . mosly scientists, who speculated gravely upon the portent of Myron's flight into the Future and they remembered the peril of the Dark Star . . . at present undiscovered in the heavens but being diligently sought by the leading astronomers and mathematicians of the world. "And one night their worst fears were confirmed. In the year of 3094, the Dark Star . . . a burned out sun from the far depths of space, was located upon the edge of the 'Coal Sack' in the Milky Way. Eclipsing and blotting out the light of the stars nearby, its diameter was measured, photographic### plates recorded the celestial$ stranger's visit, were recorded the two following nights, and the news radiated to all parts of the globe immediately thereafter. The Dark Star was advancing toward the sun! Night after night it approached. With its discovery, two mighty factions developed throughout the entire world. These were commonly called the Acceptors and the Non-Acceptors. The Acceptors were the fatalists . . . they saw their downfall in the coming of the Dark Star because already they had learned the story of the ultimate future. . . learned it back in the year of 3000, you see. Once, I believe, there was a prevailing remark that, could one ace his ultimate destiny, he might prefer hasty extinction. It was so with the acceptors. They lost all their courage. Suicides increased ten thousandfold. The Acceptors thereby contributed to the advancement of the unhappy future which the projection into Time had portended. They named it the Age of Futility.
