45. Van Quirk's Lunar Cable ************************************************************ ensered. "Bah! Preposterous! Those rascals will argue about anything, just so long as it will occupy some of their time!" The weather began to have its effect on his sluggish system, and after a few minutes he began to nod and doze. Suddenly he sat up with a start when he heard the phone ring, and grumbling to himself he lifted it off the hook. "Yes?" he said. "Is this professor O. Van Quirk?" he asked an excited voice at the other end. He recognized the voice as one of his students and a moment later he got the shock of his life. "Remember that argument we had this afternoon about a bridge to the moon? Well, it has just been announced that the government is planbing to do just that very thing. W.P.A. project, I think. Already a great rocket ship has been build and will take off for the moon tonight, and a cable will be stretched between the two bodies! ## I'll see you on the campus in half an hour!" "Bosh!" said the professor inelegantly as he hung up. But a half hour later he was on the campus, where he was accosted by a group of excited students who were all talking at the same time. "Gee, Prof, who would have thought it!" exclaimed the gawky youth, who had first shown a bit of sense that afternoon. "Yeah, and to just think that we were ribbing you about it this afternoon!" The professor thought they were still trying to egg him on and he was just about to
