SCIENTI-SNAPS Page 11 winds lashed the ancient forest in fury; then rain, great pelting drops, added to the discomfort of the weary, forgotten little figure hurriny [sic] homeward. Jagged streaks of lightning tore the sky asunder. Deep down, the very earth seemed to grumble. Great trees were uprooted and thrown in Gen's path. Huge boulders from the mountains ahead rolled and thundered as they swept past him. A great form, wings beating wildly, fought its way across the sky. An old saber-tooth, fangs bared slunk by within ten feet of Gan. The air was filled with flying missiles. Suddenly Gen was through the trees and racing madly to the protection of his cave. Already he could see his family huddled about the fire. Then a huge rock, torn loose from its lodgings by the battling elements, covered the entrance. Gan, flinging himself forward, scratched at the stone in desperation. Thinking of his heavy short spear, he inserted it in a crack. Slowly but surely he began to lever the rock away. In a moment his family stood beside him. Below them the forest bent and bowed before the moaning wind. Faults and cracks appeared in the mountain side. Gan lifted his arms to the Moon Gods. Then he wailed in terror! The smaller of the satellites was plunging toward the earth with terrific speed. Its onrushing mass filled the entire heavens. With a thunderous roar it struck the atmosphere. Sweet oblivion came to Gan and his family as it swept downward. The sun rose, but not on the beautiful world of its setting. Barren, desolate, stripped of every visage of life. A great hole loomed in the face of mother Earth. Luna circled on, but Earth's second moon was gone.
