4 SPARX Herr Ley has a cozy platform manner that would go over big with women's clubs; it so happened that he also had something worth saying, and worth listening to. L. Sprague de Camp's address was missed in part by this reporter, who was sleeping off a stint of "fan-sleeplessness," but what was actually heard indicated another interesting and edifying speech. Ditto Dr. Gardner's remarks. Ditto Tucker's (he is a pro, you know even though he lapses into fanlike behavior now and when) extremely enlightening 1¾ minute dissertation on "etc." As a clincher to my thesis, may I remind you that Campbell, who had planned to dash off after the keynote address, stayed on the whole three days. JWC's time is worth plenty of shekels, ladies and gentlemen. If it took a pro-centered convention to do it, then let's have more pro-centered convention to do it, then let's have more pro-centered conventions. If this be treason. . . . I AGREE, DO YOU? i AGREE, DO YOU? I AGREE, DO YOU? i AGREE, DO YOU? I A OUR COVER This ish has SPARX's first lite cover, as you saw when you first opened the mag. Hope that it meets more approval. It sure cost enough. The pics were all taken at the Philcon. Here's the key: TOP ROW: Benk Taylor, 4E Ackerman, and Milty Rothman in the Pig Pond Fund drawing; Ron Maddux, Fred Burgess, a bith of L. Jerome Stanton, Joe Dennedy, and George Fox singing the song, "When They Bring Out Amazing," which appears elsewhere in this issue, unless I've lot the mes. SECOND ROW: Sam Mervin of Popular Publications [[striketrhough]]; the gange listening to some on e or other; John W. Cambell Jr. THIRD ROW: Thomas S. Gardner; the entertainers at the fun night; chairman Milty Rothman. BOTTOM ROW: Dr. David H. Keller; Willy Let; the sacred Blue Beard; L. Sprague de camp; George O. Smith. Among those present in the mob scene (as viewed in the original print): Burgess, Lyon, Perry, Davis, Evans, G.O Smtih, de Camp, Tucker, Kennedy, Campbell, del Rey, DeJack, Moore, Carter, Anderton, Dye, Stanley, Kuslan. Plus many others that I don't recognize. And the entertainers are: (1-r) Stanton of the guitar; Rothman, of the piano; Klacs of the monologue; pantominist Smith; author and guitarist Sturgeon; pianist and composer Davis, songatress Mary Mair, Fox, Kennedy and Burgess the (ugh) singers. AINT THEY A PURTY BUNCH? AINT THEY A PURTY BUNCH? AINT THEY A PURTY BU Oh how I dispair, To see this space as bare As a lewd Nude.
