I suppose he had a certain something in his sense of humor, for every now and then he came up with something clever, such as the dog that couldn't smell (Glorius Pool) and the dog that snored in his sleep and had his nose turned to stone (Night Life Of The Gods), but surely the ability to say funny things about dogs' noses is not enough to enable a writer to gain such a following that Smith received. Nevertheless, I suppose as soon as the next Smith novel is reprinted, swarms of people will run to read the hilarious story wherein a beautiful girl appears from the slot of a cigarette machine and follows the respectable business around through a series of ribald events, in which we meet a dog with a purple nose, people who don't object to having their houses burned down, and exasperated policemen making humorous remarks, all muddled into one big mess.
