A.P.O. 500, February 10, 1943. The Hon. S. D. Catherwood, First National Bank Building, Austin, Minnesota. My dear Judge: I was amused by that fellow Tucker's story, although I wished he had not written it. Of course, I realize that columnists have tough days when there is little to write about. The fellow is altogether too foggy about his facts. I never served under Secretary Good, nor in fact had anything to do with him. Spangler is not a close friend of mine, and to the best of my knowledge, is not interested in the slightest in us. I have never seen Guadalcanal and probably never will - nor under any circumstances whatsoever will anyone ever get me tangled up in politics, at least on a personal basis. Otherwise, I suppose the story is all right. Birds like that can spoil a perfectly good war for a fellow, and I hope no one else gets any such idea. I am in this show for just one reason - to help to get it over with once and for all - and my one ambition at the moment is to live peacefully through all the coming years in the quiet of the Iowa countryside. I can't tell you how sorry I am to hear of your accident and I hope there are no ill effects which will prevent your keeping a watchful eye on the young rapscallion, J. Catherwood Hormel.
