copy November 18, 1974 Mr. Roy Wilkins, Executive Director NAACP Special Contribution Fund 1790 Broadway New York, New York 10019 Dear Mr. Wilkins: Thank you for your letter of November 14. I understand how the Fort Madison situation could have developed, and I appreciate your efforts in making the further inquiries and giving me the explanation. Now, Mr. Wilkins, I would like to return to the reason for my initial letter on June 14, 1974. Ast that time I stated that we took strong exception to one of the statements published in our local paper. This statement was as follows: "The monied interests and power structure favor the southern route. THere is evidence that financial institutions and others are purchasing land in the area of the proposed facility." This statement reportedly was a part of the complaint filed by the NAACP as submitted to the Civil Rights Office of the Department of Transportation. As stated previously, we consider this statement to be grossly untrue and unfair. It damages our image throughout the community, and we resent its implications. It is important to us that this matter receive attention. We want an explanation from the NAACP as to the basis for the charges made. If your office is not the appropriate one to handle this inquiry, it will be appreciated if you will see that we do hear from the proper office. Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter. Sincerely, A. Anthes Smith AAS: lc
