24 SPACEWAYS THE READERS ALWAYS WRITE didn't want to be associated with them. Speer can be as stupid as he wishes about it all, but that's how it is. I suppose he would thus consider the opinions oppressed in any of my seven Western titles as things for which to hold me accountably, ah? It's just as sensible. P̲a̲u̲l̲ ̲H̲.̲ ̲S̲p̲e̲n̲c̲e̲r̲. 259 Yale Station, Hew Haven, Conn, writes: The front cover is a beaut of a Finlay (though I think fan artists should stop imitating Virgil and develop their own styles). I can't quite figure out what the picture represents, but it is very attractive (not just on account of the s. a., either). It gets — 9! Your covers are improving by leaps and bounds. Crouch's article on swapping is good, but nothing to get enthused about. Strikes me he's too entertaining a writer to waste his abilities on more-or-less technical stuff such as he's been doing lately. 7. "Altur the Avenger": a most remarkable, nightmarelike story. The author seems to have splurged herself with a mad orgy of grim imaginings, laid on almost too thick. The story runs somewhat as though it was written haphazardly, with no very sure knowledge of how it was to come out; and it certainly lacked the merit known as "restraint" — but I admire it very much. Or, rather, I admire the promise it shows for Its writer. In its overdone, somewhat awkward way, it is the work of a person with real talent. However far it may be from perfection, I cannot, in all conscience, give it less than a 9. "Moffatt Tarzan to Tarzan Movies": o̲u̲c̲h̲! That's for the title. The article Itself is much too short, but very interesting. I've often thought a "Tarzan" film faithful to the original would be a fine thing. No Academy Award winner, but interesting. I have a much-qualified, but genuine admiration for Burroughs' books, particularly the early ones...... His atmosphere is wonderful, while of course he's a master of exciting action stories. Moffatt gets a 7. ..... "Emergency Flare": cleverly titled, and on the whole better than "Beacon Light", no kidding. In an unobtrusive way. Singleton seems to be repenting of his dastardly deed, doesn't he? The reprint question is something I hadn't heard about previously—but I must be psychic or something, because just yesterday I had a hunch that F̲F̲M̲ was headed for trouble on the reprint question. (Unpleasant word repetition). I hope everything comes out all right though as far as C̲a̲p̲t̲a̲i̲n̲ ̲F̲u̲t̲u̲r̲e̲ is concerned, I've always felt it was sacrilegious..... to publish the classics in such a trashy magazine. J̲o̲h̲n̲ ̲L̲.̲ ̲G̲e̲r̲g̲e̲n̲, 221 Melbourne SE, Minneapolis, Minn, reports: The cover (9) I suspect is done by Tom Wright, but is nonetheless not too hot. On first scrutiny it appears to be a superlative drawing, but still closer inspection reveals it to be a face, a curtain hanging inconsiderately before her, and a pile of stars strewn about beneath. The dot-work suggests Wright, the Finlay stars (and that isn't meant to be an objection or harsh criticism), plus the excellent stenciling all tend to bear out this idea, because I believe Wright loves Finlay ... correct? Still, the titling isn't any too good, it being far too small and unnoticeable. Back cover is far too vague, but that little monster is cute: I take it that that ball in the background is supposed to be Mars. Study astronomy? Where's the polar-cap? (H̲o̲t̲ ̲s̲u̲m̲m̲e̲r̲. HW) "The Readers Always Write" titling doesn't fit so well with the figures, I'm afraid, but (look who's talking!) I definitely prefer the lettering. By golly—M̲i̲l̲t̲y̲ ̲i̲s̲ ̲a̲ ̲l̲o̲u̲s̲e̲! Yoicks! Let!'s not start that! I gently tremble..Did I write "Fout!"? Ohh, wait'll the MFS sees this...! Hmm, just noticed. You're the first guy to recognize the "SE" in my address as "Southeast". Most of them interpret it as a typographical error, and return a letter with S̲t̲. on it. Well for gosh sakes! I didn't realize "Cherches la Fanne" was fiction! Methought it's an article by another cynic, such as Lowndes, who is, I'm pretty sure, the SF Cynic. And doggonnit... that's all to this issue! Double-columns? Definitely! You wouldn't lose 7% of a page by any means, and it looks so darn much better. T̲y̲c̲h̲o̲ will positively not be published without double-columns. It seems to give more of a professional touch, and a much neater appearance.
