NMSM/RDD/7-656 ([Confidential? Conference?]) Research & Development Division New Mexico School of Mines Socorro Took H. Contract N Ord - 9817 Interim Report "The Drag Coefficient of Very High Velocity Spheres" A. [J? I?]. Hodges 10 October 1949 Uses (H sub 2) gun 6000 - 12000 feet/second Drag = D(p, d, v, c) =(((p)(d exponent 2))(v exponent 2)(K sub D)((v)(c))) (K sub D), depends only on (v/c), drag coefficient. ------------------------------------------------------ For description of (H sub 2) gun see NMSM/RDD/T-525 Quarterly Report, Period ending 31 December 1947. Rough idea: powder charge drives a compression piston against a closed pressurized volume of (H sub 2), at a predesigned developed pressure the projectile itself (small ball bearing) is released (how?) ([Press?] [shot?] apparently) and propelled out of the barrel). The compression piston, bounces back and forth and eventually comes to rest.
