In Professor S. Chapman's Sigma Xi lecture on the 8th of December 1954 at State University of Iowa (on "Aurorae"), he mentioned the famous case of Krogness & Tonsberg - observed the aurora on the 9th of March 1915 to have extended down to 60 km. Apparently the only well documented case of their extension to so low an altitude! Also (See L. Harang "The Aurorae" Chapman & Hall Ltd London (1951) page 55.) Harang & Bauer observed aurorae on 8 March 1932 to extend down to 60 km. ([illegible] 699 Harang). L. Harang and W. Bauer "Uber einen. Nordlichtbogen in weniger als 80 km. Höhe über die Erde" [Gerl.?] [Beit.?] Geophys 37 pages 109-15 (1932).
