17 May 1955 F. McDonald talked to Gus Ebel in O.N.R. today and learned that the latest plan for the expedition is as follows: Ship: U.S.S. Ashland APD 457-foot length (Landing Ship Dock - old designation LSD-1 Commissioned 1943) Departure. Probably 20 September (Possible 10 September) Sailing Port: Norfolk, Virginia Ship will go directly to Thule. - due there on 1 October, and will probably come back rather soon thereafter.
