1 August (Monday) Mc Donald flew his Cerenkov-crystal gear at International Falls, Minnesota on Saturday morning. Rose rapidly (1400 feet/minute) to 110,000 feet. Balloon split at this altitude & apparatus freely fell. Have been making a systematic aircraft search Saturday and Sunday without success. Very rough, wooded county. Talked to Shrout at Allegany today. They are making the igniters according to State University of Iowa design - hot wire - black powder, screen wire. - Are also making ten extras. I asked for 3 samples to be sent here for test. O.K. But must arrange with Bureau of Ord.
