On the morning of Wednesday 28 September 1955, Tom Johnson of the A.E.C. called me from Washington as follows : Amasa Bishop who has been technical coordinator of Project Sherwood for the past several years (about two, I believe) plans to leave the commission on 1 July 1956, per his original commitment. Johnson is seeking a replacement and wanted to know if I would be interested, though he was not yet in a position to make a formal offer. He felt that I was the best possibility that had yet occurred to him due to previous Sherwood experience and general scientific and administrative judgement.
