6/21/1957 Today J. Howard McMillen called to ask if I would be willing to serve on the National Science Foundation's "Advisory Panel for Physics". I explained that I would be away from the country for a substantial part of the next 6 months but otherwise would be willing to serve. He indicated that the appointment contemplated was for a three year period and that in spite of the above he would like to submit my name to Dr. Waterman for appointment. I agreed to serve, if appointed. He indicated that there is usually only one meeting a year (usually associated with the N.Y. meeting of the American Physical Society). The other
