3/17/58 On 11 & 12 March was at J.P.L. discussion of the Panofsky impiications of the Explorer II flight and the data handling for Explorer I & II, etc. 1) Apparently, the Explorer I has been in a pancake tumble since a few minutes after separation -7 second period. Presumed that the aircraft cable whip antenna turnstile (which resonates at a frequency near the 12 r.p.s.) acted as an internal energy dissipator & converted the motion to the lower energy state (see preceding pages) maintaining Iw constant.
