at high altitude when (V sub [v? gamma?]) atmospheric density is low. Cosmic ray processes best able to accomplish this are: (a) Decay of μ-mesons to inject electrons of energies ~ or > 100 mev (b) Decay of neutrons - a thermal neutron gives a Beta-ray spectrum of electrons with upper limit 782 Kev. and a very low energy proton (should calculate!). A fast neutron (whose decay in the vicinity of the earth is of course correspondingly reduced by its travel distance during its lifetime) gives a proton and an electron with energies in the laboratory system appropriate to the kinematics.
