appreciable extent. - i.e. thermonuclear heating of the atmosphere. 11/23/1958 I understand that Homer Newell has recently noted that when one considers inter-stellar flight at velocities which are a significant fraction of c, say Beta = 1/3, he should be aware of the fact that the velocity of his vehicle with respect to stationary hydrogen ions is such as to produce a very intense radiation. For example, at Beta = 1/3, hydrogen ions would have a kinetic energy relative to the vehicle of the order of 50 Mev.
