--- S - F Collector --- Page Five _____________________________________ "Out of the Past," a new Lloyd Arthur [illegible] -- backwards in time half a million year (sounds familiar). "The Smile of the Sphinx" -- dare I state a "mutant" story? Anyhow, Will Temple excells himself with this story which should rank first place in the issue. "The Eternal Professors," an early AMAZING re-print by Dr. David H. Keller. "The Sea Terror," a WEIRD re-print of Ed Hamilton's; another Harris WONDER re-print, "The Third Vibrator;" and Festus Pragnell's first yarn in AMAZING re-printed -- "The Essence of Life." Quite a re-print line-up. Before you yell, listen to Editor Gillings' own words on the subject: - - "I am very greatful to find that many US fans seem to like TOW, despite the fact that it has necessarily to make its principal appeal to English mentality, which is far different from the American, where science-fiction is concerned. "In view of this American interest, I have hesitated to use too many stories which have appeared originally in America, but, I would ask our trans-Atlantic friends to remember that since there has been so little scope for British science-fiction in the past, there are very few writers here who have become practised at science-fiction. "I am glad to state that several new authors are coming along, who show every promise of eventually attaining that high standard the US authors have reached; but until then, it will be necessary to rely a good deal on American re-print material, which most cases is more suitable for TOW readers than any new stories could be.
