Page Sixteen --- S - F Collector --- There were faint murmurings in the columns of the professional magazines, and then Conover stepped out for a fraction of a moment to get the lay of the land and then plunged himself into an astounding maze of action. In the space of six months, he had built up many friends; contacted dozens of prominent scientifictionists; established friendly contacts with the editors of the professional magazines and then climaxed this brilliant performance by issuing the first fan magazine in years that seriously threatened to top the heights of the old FANTASY MAGAZINE. "FANTASY MAGAZINE combines with the SCIENCE FANTASY CORRESPONDENT!!" That message exploded like a twenty-inch shell in fandom. It meant important changed, indeed, for FANTASY MAGAZINE - despite various peeves held by numbers fans - was generally acknowledged as the foundation of all fandom. The only solid bass in fact. However, the "Correspondent" showed promise of eclipsing, by far, the achievements of FANTASY, and setting an all-time high for fan magazines. It did break some records. It obtained the largest paid circulation in the course of three issues of any fan magazine to obtain notices easily and profitably in the professional magazines. However, Wallis Conover, with all his fine ambitions, ideals and achievements, wrecked the entire fan field of his time as surely as FANTASY MAGAZINE had brought it into being. He took an old foundation to a new location and had no sooner got it there when he found that the new plot was no longer under his control, and that fandom's traditional FANTASY MAGAZINE was no only an unforgettable name.
