Page Eighteen --- S-F Collector scribers and by the time they had decided to print the magazine they had all of twenty-five readers. Pitiful? Maybe yes, but it was great while it lasted. Then there was Beck's SCIENCE FICTION CRITIC which started as a four-page mimeographed publication and now has worked itself up to a well-printed 20 page publication. There is initiative that did not falter, though at times it was shocked to a standstill. However, I originally started off to show just how the entire fan field collapsed when Conover lost control of the CORRESPONDENT. And, there is much more to tell. The ISA, great organization of science - science fiction that was at the height of its success, actually outlived the death of the CORRESPONDENT by less than one month, though its official decease was a few months later. Then there was the collapse of the FANTASY FICTION TELEGRAM and other Philadelphia activities. Not a tremendously important change but it went out with the "New Fantasy".....Miller's short-lived PHANTASTIQUE; McPhail's grand attempt which ended so miserably; FANCIFUL TALES disbanded; The SCIENCE FICTION FAN suspending publication for more than six months; the collapse of plans for almost ALL of the many new fan publications scheduled and the very, very dead summer that ensued. A Summer which ended with not more than six fan magazines claiming any sort of regularity in publication. Granted that not all of these events were directly due to the death of FANTASY MAGAZINE, but I hardly think it mere coincideence that nine-tenths of the fan field should suddenly cease to exist within three months after the Conover-ory of "dirty-deal" aroused a healthy
