That gentleman stared incuriously a moment, then tossed off another drink. "'The public in general heard the stories about Wollheim, but refused to believe. Those actually seeing the metamorphoses were discredited, charged with falsifications. "'Of course, Wollheim became a parish. Only Michel remained faithful. He was shunned by the [illegible].----Even Michel was often startled upon seeing a science fiction magazine clutched in paw, talon, or other grasping member, while in-human eyes scanned the pages. "'In 1941 radio stations began to pick up strange signals. These were traced by authorities to a deserted shack in the suburbs of New York. A machine inside was automatically making the signals unaided by hands. The machine was destroyed, because it interfered with other broadcasts. "'About a month later, the Earth was visited by a craft from outer space. This space ship was the first alien visitor to the planet. The ship did not offer to establish communication. It merely rested where it had landed. A huge crowd collected, but could see only a hull of silvery metal, for the ship had not ports. The [illegible] 1 grew restless. It was then that a great eagle began to circle about over the assemblage. The bird dropped lower and lower. Suddenly an opening appeared in the top of the space ship. Into this the eagle dropped. The opening clicked shut. Then the ship took off; it was out of sight in the twinkling of an eye--and it never came back. The puzzled mob slowly dispersed. "'Now, it is believed among the fans that
