Fantasy (?) Article -- THOUGHTS THUNK WHILE THI KING -- by Walt Kessel ---------------------------------- I don't know what mag this will appear in. I don't know if it will ever appear at all. I'm just sitting behind a typer at the USO here in Spokane and feel like writing. What'll come out I haven't the faintest idea. While at Sheppard Field, Texas, I met a fellow who wanted to borrow my ASF. "Sorry," I explained, "That's my favorite mag and I never let it out of my hands until I am finished." "It's my favorite mag too, he told me. I was rather surprised. People who read stf aren't rare, but when a stranger openly declares it to be his favorite reading, that's something else again, I began to think he was a fan. Imagine meeting one here at Sheppard! But alas, he never even heard of fandom, but I did have some fun explaining why a rocket exhaust doesn't 'push' against the atmosphere. I got him to join hands with another fellow and I stood in the middle and pushed on both of them, one with each hand. Then suddenly I let one hand slip off a shoulder, propelling them in the opposite direction. It was a hard fight mom, but I won. (I think.) We were all processed and ready to shop to Scott Field, Ill. for cryp school, but orders were changed at the last minute, and we ended up here in Wash., all fifteen hundred of us. (Not all changed from cyrp school though. There were quite a mixture of others thrown in.) It's the Aviation Engineers now. Maybe after six weeks of school I'll end up as a pick and shovel technician. Or maybe I'll wind up on top of a bull dozer moving ole mother earth around. Imagine my surprise when I received a copy of Ergerzerp and saw that I had written a book back in 1902. Had not the old master, Kennedy, been mixed up in it, perhaps I'd have been indignant. But you know Joe. I can't hold anything against him. He's too crazy. But I do want Rap to know that I had no part in the fake letter. Not that I'm on his side. I don't believe the Lemuria stories any more than the rest of you. I don't even think that they are entertaining reading. I started one and couldn't read more than a few pages. But I do agree with Ray, one fake won't expose another. To the three conspirators: if you're really interested in exposing Ray, and did not write the letter just for fun, then do some constructive work on the matter. Why doesn't someone examine RAP's "files" and see what's in them. Well, I've rambled long enough, and I think I'll quit before they start throwing me out. ******************************** ******************************** Fantasy Art R.R.
