I AM NOT A SCIENTIFICTION FAN by Edw. S. Wranek Years ago, I read a book, THE WARLORD OF MARS by Edgar Rice Burroughs of Tarzan fame, and so enjoyed that I obtained and read the entire series. Those books I enjoyed -- but other scientifiction and the like, I ready only in desperation and with the vain hope of finding some series of like entertainment value. So far I have failed. The chief faults I find are: 1. Triteness of plot. There are but three or four plots but -- well, it gets monotoness [sic] reading the same kind of stuff, especially in one magazine. 2. Too intricate and mostly meaningless detail -- especially in spaceship operation. Of course each trade has its own "jargon" but sometimes these writers get pretty well over-impressed with their ability to show how smart they are. 3. Complete disagreement in conditions on the earth at various periods -- sometimes the world is extremely advanced and sometimes, even at a later period, not so well advanced. It can't be helped, I know, but -- one of the distinct trends is to portray large cities with excessively tall buildings whereas the trend will be to smaller cities with lower buildings. The slowness of the present day means of transportation makes such tall buildings and large cities necessary, but [underlined] if the new science works, it will cause people to want to spread out more. Large, tall buildings are not the coming thing -- New York had to build upward because it could not spread out, but it is the freak and not the rule. If you have ever lived in a large city you will understand what I mean. More and more people are living out in the suberbs [sic] and soon a smart manufacturer will place his plant out in the open away from others -- but there must be a faster system of transportation. Anyway, you can see my point. The writer of scientifiction sticks to the outward methods of the present day -- and loves to use plastics! Also there is no system in describing the inhabitants of the various planets: In one story there are BEM's; in the next, they are super intellectuals; in the third, they are as you and I.
