Burlington Churches Plan Atomic Programs Sunday

Most Burlington churches will take part in Atomic Energy week, Oct.25 to Nov.1, Mrs. James Schramm, chairman, said today. Ministerial association and Catholic churches have indicated they will support the program and that most ministers will deal with the subject from pulpits next Sunday.

  Sen. B.B. Hickenlooper, in a letter to Mrs. Schramm, said "I feel that the various organizations in Burlington who are sponsoring this program are to be highly commended for bringing to the people of the community the problems of atomic energy and realization of the citizen's individual responsibility."
   Hickenlooper is chairman of the joint committee on atomic energy.
   Planned Monday night, immediately before a speech by Rear Admiral Lewis Straus, member of the atomic energy commission, at Memorial auditorium, is a street blackout with sound effects. Complete details will be announced later this week, Mrs.Schramm said. 
   The project is being sponsored by the League of Women Voters and many other Burlington civic and service groups, including schools. At least 2 stores have indicated they will have special window displays and another is planned for the public library.
   In addition to Straus, Forrest Seymour, of the Des Moines Register & Tribune, will talk at the auditorium.
   Straus served as private secretary to Herbert Hoover from 1917 to 1919 while the former president was administrator of food and American relief overseas. He was ordered to active duty as a lieutenant-commander a year before Pearl Harbor, served as a navy member of the joint munitions board, and a special as-
