RESOLUTION on "BURLINGTON ATOMIC ENERGY WEEK" WHEREAS it has come to the attention of the Council that there had been designated the week from Sunday October 26th, through Saturday November 1st, inclusive, as "Burlington Atomic Energy Week", and WHEREAS, this event is sponsored by the League of Women Voters, Farm Bureau, County Schools, Burlington Public and Parochial Schools, Service Clubs, and many other civic minded organizations, and WHEREAS the purpose of this event is to bring to the people of Burlington and Des Moines County, the basic facts and social implications of atomic energy through an intensive educational campaign, and WHEREAS a mass meeting will be held in the Memorial Auditorium with Admiral Lewis Straus, member of the Atomic Energy Commission, as principal speaker, and many other activities are planned for this week, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BURLINGTON, IOWA: Section 1. That the City Council does hereby endorse the designation of the last week in October as "Burlington Atomic Energy Week" and does pledge the complete and enthusiastic cooperation of the municipal government and all of its agencies and employees to the educational campaign on atomic energy, and does call upon all civic-minded residents of this city to give full support to the events of "Atomic Energy Week", Section 2. That the Supt. of the Dept, of Public Safety is hereby authorized and empowered to approve and supervise such programs and activities wherein the public safety and welfare is a factor, as may be proposed by the sponsors of the event to publicize and give additional impetus to the general public's participation in "Atomic Energy Week". The Supt. of the Public Safety or his authorized representative is designated as the member of the General Committee in charge, and is requested to advise this Council such plans and activities as he may have approved for the information of the Council. Section 3. Each plan or activity wherein the public health or safety is a factor, proposed by the sponsors shall first be approved by said Superintendent, or his authorized representative, before action is taken thereon, and the said Superintendent is further authorized to call upon the employees and agencies of City government, in such number and in such manner as he may require to effect the cooperation and assistance with which the City Council does support "Atomic Energy Week" in Burlington APPROVED Mayor ATTEST: City Clerk
