22 PUBLIC ACCOMMODATIONS in Burlington, Iowa Of the 143 establishments covered in the public accomodations survery, 62 percent (88) are eating and drinking places -- restaurants, lunch-bars and taverns --, one of the most sensitive areas from the standpoint of those maintaining the "etiquette" of segregation. The words of one restaur-antour interviewed, "you know better than that," aptly describes the rigidity of a sector of our population on the question of openoing dining facilities indiscriminately to Negro patronage. This is important to keep in mind in considering the self-survey results on public amusement. The second great bulk, 27 percent, of the establishments surveyed fall into the personal service category, beauty parlors and barber shops -- another touchy spot in the patterns of discrimination. Except for hotels, the remaining 11 percent are entertainment enterprises such as theaters, swimming pools, bowling alleys and billiard parlors. Table 3.
